Encuentro is a Spanish word that means an encounter, a coming together which offers an opportunity of looking at each other in person. This is the second Encuentro theater festival hosted by the Latino Theatre Company at the Los Angeles Latino Theatre Center, in the city of angels, California. José Luis Valenzuela, artistic director of both, master minded and procured funding for two of the collectively most important events in recent Latinx theater history: The 2014 and the 2017 Encuentro festivals. The first, in 2014, meant to gather Latinx theatremakers for the first time since 1992 the last TENAZ festival--Teatros Nacional de Aztlán, the ideological cohesive glue of the Chicano-Latino theater festivals since the 1970s.  The X in Latinx honors those of our artists who do not identify with binary male-female gender identities. Ideologically we, as a community, have outgrown the a/o suffix, as in Latina/o.

Encuentro es un término del español que se refiere a la oportunidad de mirarse en persona. Este es el segundo festival de teatro Encuentro organizado por la Latino Theatre Company, con sede en el Los Angeles Latino Theatre Center, ubicado en la ciudad de los Ángeles, California. José Luis Valenzuela, director artístico de ambos, es un hábil maestro capaz de obtener fondos para los dos eventos más importantes en la historia reciente del teatro latino: los festivales Encuentro 2014 y 2017. El primer festival de TENAZ - Teatros Nacional de Aztlán, se había realizado en la década de 1970. La X en Latinx honra a aquellos de nuestros artistas que no se identifican con las identidades binarias de género masculino-femenino. Ideológicamente, como comunidad, hemos superado el sufijo a/o, como en Latina/o. El Encuentro 2017 amplía la conversación para incluir 14 piezas de las Américas: 1 de Canadá y 5 de América Latina de habla hispana, y 8 compañías de América Latina, en un evento que duró 3 semanas y que, de una manera más amplia, incorporó el componente hispanohablante.
