The construction of modern purpose-built, public, theatres, issued in a new period in theatre history and public entertainment. Though the transition to permanent sites came a bit earlier in Spain (1579), the first enclosed, purpose built, public theatres were not constructed until the 1730s.    In, Edinburgh, traveling companies performed publicly wherever they could until about 1715.  Nevertheless, it was not until 1725 that the first efforts were made to establish permanent places for performances in Edinburgh.  Regardless of the time period, the country, or the city, these first venues were precursors to purpose-built, permanent public theatres.  This work explores the establishment of these permanent venues by comparing and contrasting the, Coliseo de la Cruz, in, Madrid, and the, Theatre Royal, in Edinburgh as representatives of a new trend in public entertainment.

La construcción de teatros públicos construidos específicamente para representaciones teatrales, acompañaba un período nuevo en la historia del teatro y el entretenimiento. Aunque la transición a sitios permanentes en España llegó más temprano con los Corrales (1579); los primeros teatros permanentes no llegarían a, Edimburgo, hasta después de 1725. No importa ni la época, ni el país, ni la ciudad, estos primeros sitios servían como precursores de los edificios permanentes construidos como teatros.  Este ensayo investiga el establecimiento de tales sitios comparando y contrastando el Coliseo de la Cruz, de, Madrid, y el, Teatro Real, de, Edimburgo, como representantes de esta ola nueva en el entretenimiento público.
