El error de J.S. Mill:
El rechazo de la caballerosidad
y la imposible erradicación de la violencia patriarcal

 

 

John Stuart Mill es autor de un libro clave para el feminismo en lengua inglesa: The Subjection of Women (1869). Fruto de su colaboración con Harriet Taylor, este volumen recibió una primera lectura feminista profunda en el s. XX por parte de Kate Millett en 1970. Partiendo de Millett, argumento aquí que al celebrar la propuesta milleana de igualdad legal para ambos géneros se suele pasar por alto la importancia de la ‘caballerosidad moral’ en la conducta masculina, ideal que Mill contribuyó a destruir. De hecho, se rechazó la caballerosidad como arma patriarcal sin pensar en que la sola legislación no puede darles a las mujeres respeto ni justicia. Para ello se requiere una nueva moral masculina que incluya en la antigua caballerosidad el respeto hacia el más débil dentro de un sentido igualitario de justicia. Sin estos valores no se atajará jamás el problema de la violencia machista.

Abstract
John Stuart Mill is the author of a key book for feminism in English: The Subjection of Women (1869). In collaboration with Harriet Taylor, this volume received a first deep feminist reading in s. XX by Kate Millett in 1970. From Millett’s ideas, I argue here that by celebrating this proposal legal equality for both genders it is often overlooked the importance of 'moral chivalry' in male behavior, an ideal that Mill helped to destroy. In fact, chivalry as patriarchal weapon was rejected without thinking of that legislation alone can not give women respect and justice. In order to reach that goal, a new male morality which includes into ancient chivalry the respect for the weakest in an egalitarian sense of justice, is required. Without these values problem of male violence will never be solved.
