El ensayo coteja dos experiencias de duelo, la de Catulo, el poeta latino, y la de César Vallejo; ambos escriben poemas sobre la muerte del hermano. Son poemas elegíacos en los que la muerte, la memoria y la escritura parecieran conformar una especie de nudo borromeo; de ahí que la lectura desde el Freud de “Duelo y melancolía” (1917) y de “La pizarra mágica” (1925), escritos por las fechas en que Vallejo publica Los heraldos negros (1919), resulta inevitable. Similitudes y diferencias en la elaboración que, alejados por tantos siglos, hacen del duelo poéticamente, constituyen el eje de este ensayo, incluido él también una experiencia personal de duelo por un hermano muerto.

Abstract

The essay compares two experiences of mourning, that of Catulo, the Latin poet, and that of César Vallejo; both write poems about the death of the brother. They are elegiac poems in which death, memory, and writing seem to form a kind of Borromean knot; hence the reading from Freud of "Mourning and Melancholy" (1917) and of "The magic blackboard" (1925), written around the dates that Vallejo published Los heraldos negros (1919), is inevitable. Similarities and differences in the elaboration that, distant for so many centuries, make mourning poetically, constitute the axis of this essay, including a personal experience of mourning for a dead brother.
