Resumen

Para referirse a los contextos y la estética del artista montevideano Carlos Páez Vilaró (1923-2014) en un escrito sumamente breve se hace necesario seleccionar algunos momentos de su producción y obras tal vez emblemáticas de los mismos. Así es como aparecen en escena sus pinturas de los cincuenta; los primeros murales de los sesenta y a modo de cierre una capilla y sus luminosos vitrales. Los tres trayectos aclaran sobre la modernidad, el sincretismo y el filogoticismo presentes en las producciones de Carlos Páez Vilaró. Las comparaciones con otros artistas de su tiempo acercan además al lector a una mejor comprensión de la diversidad estética obrada por un rioplatense.

Modernity, syncretism and phylogoticism in Carlos PáezVilaró: contexts and aesthetics of a River Plate artist

Abstract

To refer to the contexts and aesthetics of the Montevidean artist Carlos PáezVilaró (1923-2014) in an extremely brief writing, it is necessary to select some moments of his production and perhaps emblematic works of them. This is how his paintings from the fifties appear on the scene; the first murals of the sixties and by way of closure a chapel and its luminous stained-glass windows. The three routes clarify the modernity, syncretism and phylogoticism present in the productions of Carlos PáezVilaró. The comparisons with other artists of his time also bring the reader closer to a better understanding of the aesthetic diversity produced by a River Plate native.
