Abstract

This essay examines Brazilian marginal peripheral literature through the works Quarto de Despejo, by Carolina Maria de Jesus, and Viela Ensanguentada, by Wesley Barbosa, seeking to highlight how these narratives expose structural violence, social exclusion, and the precarious conditions of the urban peripheries. At the same time, it investigates literary production from the margins as a political and aesthetic practice that breaks the barriers of exclusion, claiming visibility and legitimacy in relation to the predominantly male, white, and middle-class hegemonic literary tradition. This essayistic reading articulates theoretical perspectives from Djamila Ribeiro (the concept of place of speech), Ronaldo Lima Lins (violence as narrative form), Regina Dalcastagnè (representativeness in Brazilian literature), Érica Peçanha do Nascimento (marginal literature as a social and political practice), and Edgar Cezar Nolasco (Border Biographical Criticism), establishing a dialogue in which texts, lives, and lived experiences from the margins — including the authors’ own experiences as women inhabiting the social fractures of economic precariousness — constitute epistemological tools of analysis. From this specific border location, yet distinct from that of those whose marginalization is intersectionally intensified by racism, we develop a reading that acknowledges the radical alterity of Carolina and Barbosa while exercising the ethics of listening proposed by Border Biographical Criticism. The aim is to denounce structural inequalities, to reclaim the place of speech of subaltern voices, and to demonstrate the transformative power of literature as epistemic disobedience (Walter Mignolo) and social resistance.

Keywords: Marginal peripheral literature; Structural violence; Place of speech; Border Biographical Criticism; Alterity; Epistemology of the margins; Epistemic disobedience; Social resistance.
