Abstract
This essay traces Jacques Lacan’s body of work and the various moments when he addresses the notion of sublimation, linking it to other concepts that emerged throughout his teaching and writing. While many psychoanalysts have examined Lacan’s take on sublimation, they have generally focused on Seminar VII: The Ethics of Psychoanalysis. The aim of this study is, first, to examine how Lacan revisits the Freudian approach—drawing on both early essays and seminars that followed Seminar VII—and, second, how he advances and—in his characteristic fashion—twists certain key notions regarding sublimation. This essay focuses on sublimation in relation to art in Lacan’s work, without addressing extensions of the concept into clinical praxis. The objective, then, is to synthesize some of his ideas on sublimation and art to consider how they operate within the artist, the artwork, and/or the viewer of art.
