El presente trabajo de investigación surge del interés por conocer las diferencias culturales que existen en las prácticas de citación de los escritores del género académico memoria de máster. Las citas son un elemento esencial dentro de la escritura académica y desempeñan distintas funciones retóricas en cada una de las partes del trabajo académico que permiten delimitar su estructura. Para estudiar este fenómeno se ha utilizado una metodología cuantitativa y cualitativa. Los resultados obtenidos en la investigación muestran que las diferencias entre las memorias estudiadas en el grupo español y en el filipino apuntan unas tendencias generales, y que se manifiestan tanto de forma cuantitativa como de contenido. El más elevado número de citas y la longitud mayor de las secciones de la introducción y la conclusión en el grupo filipino manifiestan una desigualdad evidente en la estructura retórica de la memoria de máster en ambas convenciones culturales. Tal diferencia se corrobora por el uso de distintas funciones retóricas dentro de estos dos apartados, que obedecen a planteamientos dispares de estas secciones del trabajo académico.

 

A cross-cultural study
of the  rhetorical functions of citations
in the academic genre of master´s thesis

Abstract

This research arises from the interest in learning about the cultural differences in the use of citation of writers in the genre of master´s thesis writing. The citations are an essential element within the academic writing and play different rhetorical functions in each of the parts of academic work that help define its structure. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used to study this phenomenon. The results gathered in the research show that the differences between the theses studied in the Spanish group and in the Filipino group indicate general trends. They are evident both in quantitative form and in content. The highest number of citations and the greater length of the introductory and the concluding sections in the Filipino group evidently demonstrate a disparity in the rhetorical structure of the master´s thesis in both cultural conventions. Such difference is corroborated by the use of different rhetorical functions within the said two sections, reflecting therefore their distinct approaches to these two particular sections of academic work.
