Esta entrevista pretende traçar o perfil mais completo possível de José Tolentino Mendonça, padre, poeta, dramaturgo e vice-reitor da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, alguém que não hesita em definir-se como “uma criatura do silêncio” e que caracteriza a vida enquanto “máquina de construir desejo”. Para tal, as diferentes esferas em que desenvolve a sua atividade profissional serão escrutinadas, nomeadamente a igreja, a universidade e a imprensa, por forma a aferir a função por ele consignada ao teatro e à performance quer na sua vida quotidiana quer nas instituições a que pertence. Será, então, conferido destaque à sua experiência prévia como dramaturgo, no âmbito da qual teve oportunidade de trabalhar com duas companhias teatrais, o “o .lilástico” em 2005 e o “Teatro da Cornucópia” em 2013. Na verdade, esse será o ponto de partida para passar em revista o papel do teatro e da performance a meio caminho entre instituições.

Abstract

This interview aims to trace as completely as possible the profile of José Tolentino Mendonça, priest, poet, playwright and vice-dean of the Catholic University of Portugal, someone who defines himself as “a creature of silence” and life as a “machine for generating desire.” We shall emphasize the different spheres in which he develops his professional activity, in particular the church, university and press, trying, at the same, to assert what role he envisions for theatre and performance art both in his daily routine and within those same institutions. A strong focus will also be drawn on his previous experience as a playwright, when he had the opportunity to work with different theatre companies, namely with “o .lilástico” in 2005, and with “Teatro da Cornucópia” in 2013. In fact, the revival of that experience will be the starting point to evaluate the role of theatre and performance art in between institutions.
