Dystopias are not a modern or contemporary invention. Nevertheless, they have acquired renewed relevance in recent years. Numerous T.V series, films, novels and works for the stage that have to do with dystopian matters are testimonies of this. According to some academics, the utopian imagination is exhausted therefore, dystopias are here to fill the gap. In these works of art, the autonomous self is at risk and once deprived of autonomy, it enters into a metaphorically hellish state.
