  Both Rodó and Kahlo represent Latin American modernism; both produced modernist work emanating from a pressing need of determining Latin American identity. Rodó’s essay Ariel and many of Kahlo’s artworks present two very different instances of how Latin Americans tackled the issue of identity. While Rodó championed a European aesthetic modernism as the only successful way to achieve a modern and successful society, Kahlo advocated a very different modernism that called for the rediscovering of the indigenous culture of her native Mexico.
