Joaquín Murrieta o Murieta es un personaje legendario del Gold Rush que, víctima de la discriminación e injusticia, se convirtió en un intrépido y temible bandido. La leyenda ha sido reproducida y reinterpretada con mucha frecuencia a partir del texto seminal The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta. The Celebrated Californa Bandit (1854) de John Rolin Ridge.

Brígido Caro reecribió la leyenda del bandido desde su propia experiencia de inmigrante mexicano y teniendo en cuenta el contexto social y cultura de Los Ángeles de comienzos del siglo XX.  Su drama fue representado de modo intermitente y con mucho éxito en los Teatro Hidalgo y Teatro Mason de Los Ángeles entre 1927 y 1938. La publicación del drama de Caro enriquece la saga teatral del mítico e icónico bandido.
