Desde hace algunas décadas, lo criollo y lo chicha conviven en la ciudad de Lima. Mientras que lo criollo mira hacia el pasado colonial, está anclado en la tradición y siente nostalgia de un cierto abolengo perdido, lo chicha es ambivalente: si, por un lado, los inmigrantes de primera generación recuerdan con melancolía su anterior vida provinciana, los neolimeños miran de cara al futuro y valoran la innovación más que la tradición. A pesar de sus profundas diferencias, lo criollo y lo chicha comparten un instinto caníbal y sincrético que, de alguna manera, los acerca. Formando un gran collage coral de citas textuales que reflejan una pluralidad de perspectivas, voces y opiniones—en particular las de Sebastián Salazar Bondy en Lima la horrible sobre el criollismo—, este ensayo contrasta diversas manifestaciones de lo criollo y lo chicha, y especula acerca del futuro de ambas vertientes culturales.

Abstract

For some decades, the creole and the chicha have coexisted in the city of Lima. While the creole, anchored in tradition, looks towards the colonial past, and it feels nostalgic for a certain lost lineage, the chicha is ambivalent: If, on the one hand, first-generation immigrants feel melancholic about their previous rural life, Neo-limeños (Neo-Limean) look towards the future, and value innovation over tradition. Despite their profound differences, the creole and the chicha share a cannibal and a syncretic instinct that, in certain way, brings them closer. Forming a large choral collage of quotations that reflect a plurality of perspectives, voices and opinions—in particular those of Sebastián Salazar Bondy’s about criollismo in his Lima la horrible—, this essay contrasts various manifestations of the creole and the chicha, and speculates about the future of both cultural strands.
